Morocco welcomed more than 17 million tourists in 2024, breaking its annual arrivals record and marking a 20% increase compared to 2023, officials announced on Thursday.
The Ministry of Tourism revealed that the 2024 figures surpassed the previous year’s total by approximately three million visitors. More than half of the arrivals were foreign tourists, while the rest were Moroccans living abroad, with both categories showing growth over 2023.
Tourism, a key economic driver, currently contributes around 7% to Morocco’s GDP and directly employs over 827,000 people, according to the ministry.
Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor attributed the record-breaking numbers to targeted government investments and the dedication of industry professionals. Morocco has focused on modernizing its airports, public transport, and hospitality infrastructure, alongside expanding partnerships with low-cost airlines like Ryanair.
Last year, 120 new international air routes were introduced, bringing the total to 705, helping to attract more visitors.
Tourism revenues reached over $10 billion by November 2024, reflecting a 7% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
Morocco’s tourism sector is expected to receive a further boost as the country prepares to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025 and co-host the FIFA World Cup in 2030. These events are anticipated to bring significant international attention and visitors to the North African nation.
