Morocco’s cultural heritage took the spotlight at the 2024 International Bazaar hosted by the United Nations Women’s Circle (UNWG) in Geneva, with the Kingdom serving as the main organizer. The event, themed “United for Children,” was officially opened by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber, who underscored the Kingdom’s deep cultural diversity and its role as a crossroads of civilizations.
Ambassador Zniber, who also holds the presidency of the Human Rights Council, highlighted Morocco’s centuries-old model of coexistence among different cultures, religions, and civilizations, positioning it as a unique link between Africa, Europe, and the East. Speaking to a distinguished audience at the Palais des Nations, Zniber reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to multilateralism and diversity, key values shared by the United Nations community.
The event, which drew representatives from 76 countries, saw Morocco take center stage with its theme, “Children and Peace in the World.” The Ambassador called for an end to the recruitment of children in armed conflicts, a message that resonated with the global community present.
Other speakers at the opening, including the Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva and the President of the UNWG, praised the work of Moroccan women who dedicated months of effort to ensure the event’s success. Funds raised from the bazaar will support initiatives aimed at aiding children worldwide.
Morocco’s participation was marked by two standout booths that captured the essence of the country’s rich cultural heritage. One booth featured a large map of Morocco, along with posters highlighting the country’s iconic architecture, both ancient and modern. The other showcased a wide range of Moroccan handicrafts, from intricate textiles to masterful leatherwork, providing visitors with a tangible experience of Moroccan craftsmanship.
Visitors were also treated to the Moroccan art of hospitality, with a traditional tea ceremony and an assortment of sweet and savory dishes that reflect the country’s renowned culinary traditions.
The Moroccan stands received significant attention from the Geneva diplomatic community and a diverse range of attendees. Additionally, a trio of Moroccan Gnawa musicians, flown in from Budapest, captivated the audience with a performance that took them on a musical journey through Morocco’s centuries-old heritage.
The International Bazaar, an annual event organized by the wives of diplomats in Geneva, serves as a platform for cultural exchange, bringing together nations in solidarity while raising funds for charitable causes.
