Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit met with Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska in Madrid on Monday to discuss ways to boost cooperation in key areas like security, migration, and preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The meeting highlighted the strong and long-standing partnership between the two nations, built on mutual respect and shared goals.
This partnership gained further momentum after King Mohammed VI of Morocco and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez adopted a strategic roadmap in April 2022. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing this framework, and Monday’s meeting showcased the progress made so far.
Solidarity in Times of Need
The ministers emphasized the strong spirit of solidarity between Morocco and Spain. They recalled recent examples, such as Spain’s quick response with rescue teams after the Al Haouz earthquake in Morocco. Similarly, Morocco stepped in to help Spain during severe floods in Valencia. These acts of mutual support, the ministers noted, reflect the deep and lasting bond between the two countries.
Boosting Security Cooperation
Security was a major focus of the talks. Both ministers praised the progress made in fighting organized crime and terrorism, particularly through better intelligence sharing and operational coordination. They agreed to further strengthen their efforts to tackle emerging threats and improve collaboration between their security services.
Grande-Marlaska called the security partnership “exemplary” and highlighted Morocco’s key role in combating human trafficking networks. “Morocco is a crucial partner for Spain in addressing shared security challenges,” he told the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP).
Shared Approach to Migration
Migration was another important topic. The ministers agreed on the need for a unified approach to tackle irregular migration and human trafficking. They also shared a vision for promoting legal and structured migration, which they believe will strengthen ties between their societies while addressing security concerns.
The Permanent Joint Migration Group (GMMP), a key platform for managing migration flows, was praised for its role in facilitating cooperation. Both ministers stressed the importance of maintaining this mechanism to ensure effective migration management.
Marhaba Operation and World Cup Preparations
The ministers also celebrated the success of the 2024 Marhaba operation, which helps Moroccan expatriates travel to their home country. They reviewed preparations for the 2025 edition, organized by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, to ensure its smooth execution.
Looking ahead, the ministers discussed the joint hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. They emphasized the importance of close collaboration among the three countries to ensure the tournament’s success. Grande-Marlaska noted that sports cooperation complements the strong security partnership between Morocco and Spain. “We are working hard to put the necessary security measures in place for this global event,” he said.
A Strong Partnership for the Future
The meeting between Laftit and Grande-Marlaska reinforced the strong ties between Morocco and Spain and set the stage for deeper cooperation in critical areas. Their discussions highlighted the enduring solidarity between the two nations and their shared commitment to tackling common challenges.
As Morocco and Spain continue to work together on security, migration, and international events like the 2030 World Cup, their partnership stands as a model for regional cooperation and mutual respect.
