Manuel José Gonçalves, Mozambique’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to address global challenges and secure a brighter future. Speaking on the slow progress of the 2030 Agenda, Gonçalves urged the mobilization of resources to finance its goals, and called for stronger partnerships to tackle terrorism, poverty, conflict, and climate change.
Addressing the ongoing calls for reform of the United Nations Security Council, Gonçalves joined advocates for Africa to be granted a permanent seat, citing it as a necessary step to correct historical injustices. He also praised the adoption of UN resolution 2719 (2023), expressing hope that it would foster greater African ownership of peace initiatives and ensure sustainable financing for African Union peace operations.
Gonçalves voiced concern over the escalating global conflicts, stressing that the safest path to ending the war in Ukraine lies in fostering dialogue between the conflicting parties. He also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians in the Middle East, while highlighting the importance of dialogue to restore peace in Sudan.
Denouncing unilateral actions that violate the principles of the UN Charter, he reiterated Mozambique’s call for the total lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and Cuba, describing them as unfair and counterproductive to multilateralism.
Highlighting Mozambique’s contribution to global peace and security as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Gonçalves underscored his government’s efforts in combating terrorism. He also expressed gratitude to Mozambique’s international partners for their support in restoring peace and rebuilding infrastructure in regions affected by terrorism.
