The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the country’s ruling party, has called for an end to the destruction of its structures and threats to its supporters amidst ongoing post-election protests.
In a statement issued after the 37th ordinary session of its Political Commission, Frelimo expressed concern over what it described as “violence, destruction, and looting” during demonstrations, particularly in the capital, Maputo. The party condemned threats to its members and other Mozambicans and denounced the vandalism of party headquarters and public institutions.
While acknowledging the right to protest, Frelimo criticized the unrest as an attempt to disrupt democratic order and hinder the functioning of state institutions and the private sector, warning of its economic and social repercussions.
The party urged political entities and presidential candidates to abide by Mozambique’s laws and called for patience until the Constitutional Council announces the official election results.
“There is no justification for the loss of lives or the destruction of what the Mozambican people have worked hard to achieve,” the statement emphasized, urging an end to the involvement of minors in protests and advocating for peaceful resolutions.
