Kenya has reported two new mpox cases, one each in Nakuru and Mombasa, increasing the total confirmed cases nationwide to 31. These infections are now distributed across 12 counties, with Nakuru leading with 10 cases, followed by Mombasa with 8 and Nairobi with 2.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni assured citizens of ongoing efforts to control the outbreak during the festive season, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in ensuring national health and safety.
Authorities have identified 217 close contacts, with 204 monitored over a 21-day period. Nine contacts tested positive, while follow-up is ongoing for four others.
Screening efforts at entry points have been heightened, with over 2.6 million travellers checked. Of 351 samples analyzed, 31 tested positive, reflecting an 8.8% positivity rate.
In response, the Ministry of Health and partner organizations have deployed a rapid response team for case management, contact tracing, and public education. Mental health support is also being provided to affected individuals.
Preventive Measures Against Mpox
Avoid close contact with individuals showing mpox-like symptoms.
Do not share personal items like towels or clothing with infected persons.
Wash hands frequently with soap or use hand sanitizer.
Limit unprotected sex and reduce the number of sexual partners.
Avoid contact with wild animals and uninspected meat products.
Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms, including a rash, appear.
The government continues to urge vigilance and adherence to preventive guidelines to curb the spread of the disease.
