MTN will seek partnerships with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite providers to expand network coverage in Africa’s rural and remote regions. In some parts of Africa, broadband or fiber connectivity is unavailable, leading to challenges in integrating into the modern world.
The LEO satellites MTN plans to use orbit at a lower altitude and operate at faster speeds compared to traditional satellites. Effectively utilizing these satellites could provide affordable and reliable internet access to Africa’s rural areas.
MTN is pursuing this initiative to strengthen its presence on the continent and increase its effectiveness in underserved regions. Before this project, MTN has been conducting pilot projects to test the concept.
MTN had not been successful in the Nigerian market, and this project is a step toward recovering from those losses. If successful, the project could position MTN as a leader in bridging Africa’s digital divide.
