Kipchumba Murkomen, the Transport CS, has disputed rumors that he was caught with millions of cash in Dubai.
On Monday, Murkomen denied the charges as false, claiming that no one should be permitted to fly with such a large sum of money.
The CS went on to clarify that the amount mentioned is too large for someone to carry while traveling.
“I believe it was USD 210 million. That amount would require three or four pickups to transport. You’d need an entire section of a plane to carry that much money, and it’s unlikely you’d even get past a hotel with it,” Murkomen stated on Obinna TV.
“When they claimed I was arrested in Dubai, I was actually in Nairobi. Even when the president was asked, it was like, ‘Do you mean Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or some place called Dubai in Kenya?’ Let’s be serious. I’m accustomed to that kind of talk. I’m completely used to fake news.”
The CS added that the largest amount of money he has ever carried within the country is approximately Sh2 million, and the most he has taken abroad is US $10,000. He noted that this has been the case since he was born.
“Perhaps Sh1.5 or 2 million… The largest amount I’ve carried while traveling since birth is around US$10,000, especially to countries where you might encounter card issues.”
The Transport CS emphasized that he has faithfully served Kenyans, something he is proud of.
He said that in his two years as a Cabinet member, no one had accused him of corruption.
Murkomen expressed pride in fulfilling this commitment and emphasized that there is no need for anyone to sympathize with him.
“I take pride in fulfilling my promise over the past two years not to involve myself in corrupt activities or scandals.
“When others express sympathy for me, I remind them of one thing: amidst all this discussion, there is a silver lining – in these two years, not a single person has accused me of corruption.”
