Namibia’s President, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba stated in UN General Assembly, that the UN Security Council, fails to address African needs and must be reformed to meet today’s challenges. He called for global transformation, emphasizing the need for equal partnerships in fighting war, poverty, injustice, and inequality.
The President said that Namibia is particularly concerned about climate change, which is affecting fish stocks, livelihoods, and food security, especially in the wake of the El Niño phenomenon and severe droughts. Namibia declared a State of Emergency to address these issues, as he stated.
As the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration approaches, he highlighted Namibia’s progress in gender equality, ranking among the top nine countries globally. “Our country has achieved 50% female representation in its National Assembly and looks forward to the possibility of a female UN Secretary-General.”
“Namibia is also focused on developing a sustainable energy mix to support industrialization and contribute to global climate goals, calling on developed nations to increase support for energy transitions in developing countries.” he said.
