NamPower, the leading electricity provider in Namibia, is set to embark on a groundbreaking project in partnership with two Chinese firms to construct the country’s largest solar power plant. This ambitious development will see the installation of a 100-megawatt solar facility, significantly increasing Namibia’s current energy capacity, which is approximately 500 megawatts.
The new solar plant aims to address Namibia’s energy challenges by reducing its dependency on electricity imports from neighboring countries, particularly Zambia and South Africa. This shift is expected to stabilize electricity tariffs, making energy more affordable and reliable for Namibian consumers. In addition to providing economic benefits, the project is a strategic move towards energy self-sufficiency and is anticipated to stimulate further economic growth within the country.
Moreover, this solar initiative is a testament to Namibia’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By focusing on renewable energy, the plant will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and support global efforts to combat climate change.
The construction will be carried out by China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd. and Chint New Energy Development (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd., which are recognized for their expertise in large-scale energy projects. The German development bank KfW is providing significant funding for the venture. The solar power plant is projected to be operational within 18 months, with commercial activities expected to commence in the second quarter of 2026. This development is poised to be a pivotal step in advancing Namibia’s energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.
