The semi-final matches of the Nedbank Cup in South Africa were played today.
In the first match, two of the league’s biggest teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, faced off.
League leaders Sundowns started the game strongly and displayed dominant play in the early stages. This paid off in the final seconds of the first half when midfielder Teboho Mokoena scored, giving them a 1-0 lead and high morale going into the second half.
However, everything changed in the second half. Kaizer Chiefs found the equalizer in the 51st minute through Wandile Duba, making it 1-1. After this goal, the momentum gradually shifted to Kaizer Chiefs. Towards the end of regular time, Ashley Du Preez stepped up and made it 2-1. Despite being 8th in the league, Kaizer Chiefs now have a chance to end the season with a trophy.
In the other semi-final match, Orlando Pirates—who are still competing on three fronts—secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Kabelo Dlamini in the 22nd minute.
Pirates have now shown solid defensive performances in back-to-back cup matches. If they can maintain this consistency, they might pose a serious challenge to Sundowns in the league race.
The final will be contested between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. While Pirates have generally had the upper hand this season, anything can happen in a match like this.
The date of the final has not yet been announced.
