Uganda has unanimously approved a proposal for a single SIM card policy aimed at streamlining communication across all mobile networks in the country.
Previously, mobile phone users had to carry multiple SIM cards, but this development will eliminate that burden. Parliament has urged the Uganda Communications Commission to expedite the implementation of this policy.
The proposed consumer protection measure will allow subscribers to retain their phone numbers when switching networks or changing geographic locations, according to lawmakers.
This step is expected to improve network accessibility, reduce communication costs, and increase healthy competition among telecom providers.
However, despite this positive outlook, there are some challenges that complicate the implementation of the initiative. Minister of ICT, Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku, warned that the transition will require infrastructure investments from both the government and telecom providers.
Nevertheless, the costs Uganda will incur in this process may offset its expenses in the coming years.
