The military-led government in Niger has reportedly ordered the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to close its offices and leave the country, according to local media.
The directive was conveyed to the humanitarian organization through a verbal note received on Tuesday, as reported by the news outlet Air Info.
Nigerien authorities had previously expressed concerns in November over the European Union’s direct distribution of humanitarian aid to NGOs, including the ICRC, claiming it bypassed principles of transparency and cooperation.
From January to June 2024, the ICRC provided assistance to approximately 140,000 people in Niger, offering primary healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and vaccination services for livestock. The organization has been active in the country for 35 years.
The Nigerien government has not publicly commented on the order, nor has it provided an official reason for the expulsion. The ICRC has also yet to issue a statement regarding the decision.
