Nigeria is set to participate in the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit beginning November 11, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, due to its longstanding ties and strategic relationship with the Middle East. The summit will bring together key regional and international leaders to discuss critical issues, with the Israel-Palestinian conflict expected to be a central topic.
According to Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the country’s involvement underscores its commitment to advocating for peace in the region. President Tinubu, who will attend the summit, is expected to call for an immediate ceasefire and highlight Nigeria’s longstanding position that the conflict can only be resolved through diplomatic means, not military force.
Idris emphasized that Nigeria believes a peaceful resolution is essential, with both Israel and Palestine living side by side in secure borders. He noted that Nigeria has consistently supported a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace.
The conflict, which escalated following a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Idris warned that unless peace is achieved, the conflict could destabilize the region and have far-reaching consequences for global security, including for Nigeria.
As a leading voice for peace, Nigeria continues to push for a solution that would prevent further bloodshed and ensure stability both in the Middle East and worldwide.
