Nigeria’s government has taken a major step to tackle unemployment. The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development have signed an agreement to create 2.5 million jobs annually.
The deal, made in partnership with private firm Sapphital Limited, supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This initiative aims to boost employment and economic growth.
Opportunities for All Nigerians
At the signing event, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha said the program would strengthen the workforce and expand job opportunities.
“This partnership will provide Nigerians with the skills they need to succeed,” she said. “We are committed to building a strong and resilient workforce.”
The initiative includes the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP) and the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA). These programs will help people develop skills, find jobs, and start businesses.
While the project focuses on young people, it will also support retired professionals and those affected by hazardous jobs. Onyejeocha stressed that even those unable to do physically demanding work could still contribute.
“Age is no longer a barrier. Retired professionals and former uniformed officers can apply for remote jobs through our platform,” she explained.
Support for Veterans and People with Disabilities
The program will also help ex-servicemen and people with disabilities, including soldiers injured in combat.
“Many of our wounded soldiers still have valuable skills. They should not be left behind,” Onyejeocha said.
Commitment to Economic Growth
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande emphasized the government’s dedication to job creation.
“Our success depends on how well we reduce unemployment. That’s why this partnership is so important,” he said.
According to Olawande, LEEP and NIYA will combine vocational training, technology, and mentorship. The goal is to equip young Nigerians with the skills they need to thrive in today’s economy.
“This is about real action, not just promises,” he added.
The program will not only prepare people for jobs but also encourage them to start businesses.
Focus on the Green Economy
LEEP will train people in sustainable industries. Courses will include solar panel installation, greenhouse farming, and recycling.
Unemployment remains a major issue in Nigeria. This initiative marks a strong effort to provide lasting solutions and create an inclusive workforce.
