Nigerian Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has pledged to provide a detailed briefing to the House of Representatives on the operational and regulatory framework for private airstrips, focusing on the recent license granted to Bishop David Oyedepo’s Canaanland airstrip.
This response follows a motion in the House urging a review of private airstrip licenses, including Oyedepo’s, which was recently approved by the federal government. Keyamo, addressing the issue on his personal social media account, highlighted the importance of understanding the sector’s operations and regulatory standards.
He assured that the ministry would engage with the House to explain private airstrip operations and the strict regulations overseen by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). He added that private airstrip owners are responsible for building infrastructure such as runways and terminals, while NAMA manages air traffic control once control towers are handed over, ensuring compliance with national aviation standards.
Keyamo acknowledged that the House’s concerns were likely well-intentioned but emphasized the need for a deeper grasp of aviation regulatory processes.
