Nigerian Afrobeat artists have once again taken center stage in the Grammy Awards, with all five nominations in the Best African Music Performance category going to Nigerian stars. This marks the second consecutive year that Nigeria’s influence has dominated the category, reinforcing the country’s pivotal role in shaping contemporary global music.
Introduced last year to increase the inclusiveness and representation of African talent at the Grammys, the Best African Music Performance category highlights the growing international reach of Afrobeat and Nigerian music. This year’s nominees include Yemi Alade, recognized for her hit “Tomorrow”; Asake and Wizkid for their collaboration on “MMS”; Davido and American artist Chris Brown for their joint track “Sensational”; Burna Boy with his song “Higher”; and Tems for her single “Love Me JeJe.” These artists have consistently achieved massive success, capturing global audiences with music that blends vibrant rhythms and distinct cultural elements.
In 2024, South African artist Tyla took home the first award in this category for her track “Water,” a breakthrough moment that spotlighted African talent on the Grammy stage.
Beyoncé, meanwhile, leads the 2025 Grammy nominations with 11, following the release of her critically acclaimed album that celebrates Black country culture. With this year’s nods, she becomes the most-nominated artist in the history of the Grammys, a testament to her enduring impact on the music industry.
The Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on February 2, 2025, in Los Angeles, where winners will be announced in a celebration of global music excellence.
