The 27-year-old Nigerian national team center-back Chidozie Awaziem has transferred from FC Cincinnati to Colorado Rapids.
The deal includes $1 million in General Allocation Money (GAM), with an additional $200,000 GAM based on performance, as well as a percentage of the next transfer fee.
Despite playing in defense, Awaziem has recorded 3 assists in 14 matches this season. He has previously played for Porto, Boavista FC, and Hajduk Split.
His career achievements include a Portuguese Super Cup and a Croatian Cup. Awaziem has made 33 appearances for the Nigerian national team, representing his country in both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
If Colorado Rapids exercises the option, Awaziem could remain with the team until 2027. Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith commented on the transfers of Awaziem and Ian Murphy:
“We are excited to welcome Chidozie and Ian to the Rapids. Chidozie is a leader and a powerful defender with vast experience in Europe and on the international stage, while Ian has established himself as an athletic and accomplished defender in MLS.”
“Both players are strong fits for our game model and they bring added quality to our group as we look to build off a successful 2024 season and continue strengthening our team.”
