The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has announced the launch of the EUR 410 million Omi Eko project. This ambitious initiative aims to transform Lagos’ inland waterways into a modern transportation network. The project is expected to reduce road traffic, boost tourism, and promote economic growth. It will begin in 2025 and continue until 2030.
Funding for the project comes from the Global Gateway Initiative. The French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are contributing EUR 360 million. The Lagos State Government is adding EUR 40 million, with an extra EUR 10 million from the private sector.
The Omi Eko project will use Lagos’ extensive waterways to provide sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. It aims to reduce road congestion by integrating ferry services with existing road and rail networks. This will create a smooth and efficient transportation system. The project includes dredging 15 ferry routes, deploying over 78 electric ferries, and building or upgrading 25 ferry terminals. These terminals will have charging stations, parking facilities, waiting areas, digital payment systems, and safety equipment.
Environmental protection is a key focus. The electric ferries will have low-emission engines to reduce pollution. The project will also stimulate economic activities along waterfront communities, supporting local businesses and tourism. Public-private partnerships will play a crucial role in achieving these goals.
Safety is a top priority. LASWA will enforce strict safety rules, run public education campaigns, and ensure that all passengers and operators follow safety guidelines. The project will also introduce a smart ticketing system using Cowry Card technology to make travel more convenient and reduce waiting times.
The Omi Eko project aims to change urban mobility in Lagos by providing a reliable and eco-friendly alternative to road transport. It supports Lagos’ vision of becoming a smart, resilient, and economically vibrant city.
