The last time Nigeria’s national football team scored three goals against any Ghanaian team was during the 2002 World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles B team secured a 3-1 victory this year to qualify for the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
This win has brought renewed hope to the Super Eagles B team, which had faced six years of disappointment. It also signals the rise of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Several factors contributed to this remarkable performance. First, Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu’s excellent management of the team stands out. Both have successful coaching careers at Remo Stars and Enugu Rangers. Ilechukwu’s Rangers won the NPFL title last season, while Ogunmodede’s Remo Stars are currently fighting for the title this season.
Secondly, the Super Eagles B team was selected entirely on merit, which strengthened the squad. The team also benefited from a group of players who already played together at their league clubs, enhancing team chemistry. Seven of the starting eleven came from top Nigerian clubs—Remo Stars, Rangers, and Enyimba.
Furthermore, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) wisely granted the coaches autonomy in team selection and tactics, allowing them to implement their strategies effectively.
Finally, the increasing quality of the NPFL has created a more competitive and professional league environment, which positively impacted the Super Eagles B team’s performance.
This victory could be a positive signal for Nigerian football, but it is important to maintain this environment to ensure sustainable success.
