President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday heralded a new chapter in Edo State’s democratic history as Senator Monday Okpebholo and Dennis Idahosa were officially sworn in as governor and deputy governor, respectively. The event, which marked the triumph of democratic values, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the President.
In his address, President Tinubu reassured Nigerians that the country had left its most challenging economic period behind. “We have overcome the most difficult days as a nation. We have turned back from the brink of economic collapse and now step into a period of growth,” he said in a statement released by his spokesperson, Stankey Nkwocha.
The President’s remarks, made at the inauguration ceremony, highlighted the significance of the occasion for both the state and the nation. “This is democracy in its purest form. The joy and hope that resonates today reflects the collective voice of the people, calling for a brighter tomorrow,” he declared.
Tinubu also called for national unity following the election, urging elected leaders to serve all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. He stressed the importance of reconciliation and peace, recognizing that democracy thrives when the will of the people is respected and upheld by all.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey of democratic governance, President Tinubu noted, “After more than 25 years of democracy, we can proudly say that no vote is more valuable than another. This day stands as proof of our evolution as a democratic nation.”
Turning to the future, the President expressed confidence in the potential of the new leadership in Edo State, emphasizing that Okpebholo’s mandate would focus on crucial areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development.
Governor Okpebholo, in his inaugural speech, thanked the people of Edo for their overwhelming support and pledged to remain committed to their welfare. He outlined a bold five-point agenda focused on health, security, economic growth, education, and infrastructure development.
“Edo shall rise again,” Okpebholo declared, pledging to fix the state’s roads, bring electricity to underserved communities, and empower small businesses to boost the local economy. He also promised to address youth unemployment by providing financial support for market women and empowering the state’s youth.
The new governor emphasized that his administration would prioritize respect for civil servants, the judiciary, and traditional institutions, ensuring that all sectors of the state’s governance are strengthened.
With this new leadership, Edo State embarks on a path of recovery and progress, contributing to the broader vision of Nigeria’s economic resurgence.
