Niger’s National Council has submitted its final report to General Abdourahmane Tchiani, leader of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), recommending that the country’s transition period be extended for at least five years. The report also suggests that the timeframe could be further prolonged depending on security conditions and regional developments.
According to a French newspaper, the report was presented in a formal ceremony attended by key political and diplomatic figures. General Tchiani described this phase as a “critical turning point” for Niger’s future, highlighting the country’s security challenges due to ongoing terrorist threats. He emphasized that the extended transition would provide an opportunity to stabilize the nation and rebuild state institutions.
Among the key recommendations in the report is a proposal to promote General Tchiani from “General” to “Army General,” a move aimed at strengthening his military standing. Additionally, the report suggests dissolving existing political parties and drafting a new framework to regulate future political activities.
The recommendations also state that current leaders will be eligible to participate in elections once political stability is restored.
