Octopus Energy, in partnership with British actor Idris Elba, has launched its first renewable energy project in Africa with the development of a wind farm on Sherbro Island, Sierra Leone. This groundbreaking initiative was announced at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, as global leaders and stakeholders gathered to forge climate action strategies.
The wind farm, slated for construction next year, will feature up to five turbines, supported by solar panels and battery storage. The project, situated near the island’s main town of Bonthe, is expected to generate clean power for approximately 2,000 homes annually, marking a significant step forward in addressing Sierra Leone’s pressing energy challenges.
With rural Sierra Leone’s electricity access standing at a mere 5%, this project is poised to transform the local economy. In addition to powering homes, the wind farm will support key sectors such as fishing, while providing electricity to schools, medical facilities, and electric motorbikes. Moreover, it is expected to create green job opportunities and foster partnerships with local universities to train and employ young people in renewable energy fields.
This renewable energy project aims to not only provide energy independence for Sherbro Island but also create long-term, sustainable industries for Sierra Leone’s growing youth population, 42% of whom are under the age of 15. The broader economic impact is expected to ripple across the region, benefiting sectors such as transportation, infrastructure, and shipping.
Octopus Energy’s commitment extends beyond this initial wind farm. The project will also collect vital data on local wind patterns and energy consumption, paving the way for future investments in renewable energy across the country. In alignment with Sierra Leone’s goal to have 85% of its electricity derived from renewable sources by 2030, this project marks the first of many planned initiatives.
Sherbro Island, vulnerable to climate change impacts such as rising sea levels and increased rainfall, is an urgent focal point for clean energy solutions. Actor and activist Idris Elba, who has played an instrumental role in the project, highlighted the initiative’s long-term significance, emphasizing its role in ensuring energy independence for Sierra Leone while contributing to global sustainability goals.
“This is not just about building a wind farm,” said Elba. “It’s about laying the groundwork for a sustainable future and energy independence for Sierra Leone.”
Octopus Energy’s CEO Zoisa North-Bond also expressed optimism about the project’s future. “This is just the beginning,” she said. “The success of this wind farm will provide a blueprint for future renewable energy projects across Sierra Leone and beyond.”
The partnership signals a promising future for renewable energy in Sierra Leone, where climate change and energy poverty have long been pressing concerns.
