Nigeria’s new head coach Eric Chelle has called up Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
The 25-year-old center-back will wear the Super Eagles jersey for the first time in these matches. The opportunity arose after West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi was ruled out due to injury. Ogbu, with his recent consistent performances, fully deserves this call-up.
The player has been pivotal in Slavia Prague’s defense, helping the team lead the Czech League by 13 points. He also showcased his abilities in the Champions League qualifiers and Europa League group stages.
Ogbu impressed by performing well against players with different playing styles, such as Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud, and Omar Marmoush, proving his capability at the highest level. Ogbu is known for his tough, physical defending style.
Ogbu had previously played for the Nigeria U-20 national team but had not been called up to the senior squad for a long time. However, the 25-year-old has now reaped the rewards of his patience:
“I’m not in a haste. I just believe in what I can do, and I have to wait. Other Nigerians are playing, and other players are there as well,” he said.
“It will always come to be your time if you keep working hard and improving your game. It will happen in God’s timing.”
