Orlando Pirates, aiming to stop defending champions Sundowns in the South African League, had taken a hit in recent weeks in the title race.
They first lost 2-0 to Gallants away, then were held to a 0-0 draw by Stellenbosch despite playing against 10 men.
Meanwhile, Sundowns continued their flawless progress, winning despite their heavy schedule, and opened up a 15-point gap over their rivals with four matches in hand. Fans began to believe that the title race was over.
However, Orlando Pirates reignited hope by defeating leaders Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in yesterday’s match.
Pirates started the game quickly, with Relebohile Mofokeng scoring in the 4th minute after a pass from Evidence Makgopa, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Just a minute later, Mofokeng struck again, his shot from the right corner of the box hitting the post and going into the net. The first half ended with no further goals, and the two-goal lead was maintained for a long period.
Later, Sundowns pulled one back with Khuliso Mudau scoring after a through ball from Iqraam Rayners, reducing the gap to 2-1, but it wasn’t enough for Sundowns. Orlando Pirates now need to win all their remaining matches.
Even if they succeed, they will still be 3 points behind their rivals. However, this victory proves that it’s not over yet for them.
