There were rumors that Ahmad Ahmad, the previous president of CAF from Madagascar, was involved in some ethical violations, including the misappropriation of funds.
Patrice Motsepe, who took over in 2021, is now seeking re-election in order to continue the progress that has been made under his leadership.
Motsepe, who is the 7th president of CAF, took over during a time when the organization was struggling with crises. However, CAF is now said to be in a more financially stable period.
Patrice Motsepe is also known as a mining magnate, with an estimated wealth of $3 billion. In addition to his role in football administration, he is the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African club that has won the league title for the past seven years.
Motsepe announced his decision to seek re-election after CAF’s general assembly took place in Addis Ababa. He stated that the decision was influenced by the requests of many [football federation] presidents, regional union leaders, and key stakeholders.
“I was partly taken aback by the huge insistence about continuity,” Motsepe said.
“There was some concern that there may not be the same degree of emphasis on governance, on ethics, and on the sort of fundamental changes that we’ve had to introduce.”
“A lot of good, good progress has been made, but there is still a lot of work to be done.”
