Southampton FC is in danger of relegation from the Premier League. Due to this, the club has decided to halt contract negotiations with Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu.
According to a report from Soccernet.ng, the English side aims to first secure its future in the league before making any further decisions.
The 30-year-old striker has been in poor form this season compared to the previous one. He has struggled to get regular playing time in the starting eleven and has recorded only 3 goals and 1 assist in 22 matches. A
dditionally, he has just one year remaining on his contract. Given that Onuachu still has a market in Europe, Southampton could sell him for a transfer fee. Therefore, if Southampton gets relegated this summer, Onuachu will most likely be sold to another team.
Southampton also plans to part ways with some experienced players to reduce the wage bill and create space for young talents. This situation could also affect another Nigerian player, Joe Aribo. Aribo has received offers from clubs in the Turkish Süper Lig.
Onuachu, on the other hand, hopes to prove himself again at a different club and attract the attention of Europe’s top teams. During his loan spell at Trabzonspor, he scored 17 goals in 25 matches.
For this reason, Trabzonspor may once again approach Southampton for the Nigerian striker in the summer transfer window. However, this time, they are likely to face competition from other interested clubs.
