South Africa secured their place in the World Test Championship final by defeating Pakistan by two wickets. The Proteas will face either Australia or India in the final in June.
During the match, South Africa’s chase of 148 started poorly as they collapsed from 96-4 to 99-8, losing three wickets in just four balls.
Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas, playing his first Test in years, took 6-54, but South Africa regained control through Kagiso Rabada. Rabada scored 31 not out from 26 balls, forming a crucial 51-run partnership with Marco Jansen.
South Africa had been dominant in the first three days, but day four started poorly with them at 27-3, leaving them in a desperate situation. However, Bavuma and Aiden Markram’s solid performances helped restore hope.
South Africa’s innings hit a major setback when Bavuma was dismissed for 40, caught behind by Abbas, although replays suggested the ball may have flicked his pocket instead of the bat, potentially saving Bavuma had he chosen to review.
At that stage, South Africa still needed 49 runs. Rabada and Jansen stepped up, bringing the score to 116-8. This momentum shift led to South Africa’s eventual victory.
