On January 7, 2025, Jean-Claude Gakosso, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Congo, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brazzaville to discuss further strengthening their longstanding diplomatic relations. The talks centered on implementing the key outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which took place in late 2024, with an emphasis on advancing cooperation between the two nations.
Gakosso welcomed the visit, noting the deep historical and diplomatic ties that have existed between the Republic of the Congo and China for more than six decades. Despite geographical and cultural differences, the two countries have cultivated a unique and enduring bond, which Gakosso described as a model for international cooperation. He emphasized their shared commitment to global peace, justice, and common development.
“China and the Republic of the Congo have fostered a special relationship that continues to grow stronger,” Gakosso said. “This partnership stands as a testament to what nations can achieve when they unite in pursuit of peace and mutual progress.”
Gakosso also highlighted the success of President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s visit to China in September 2024, marking a new phase in their bilateral relations. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made and reiterated the Republic of the Congo’s commitment to furthering cooperation with China for the mutual benefit of both peoples.
The Republic of the Congo, as a co-chair of FOCAC, plays a pivotal role in facilitating China-Africa collaboration. Gakosso reaffirmed his country’s dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities in advancing the outcomes of the Beijing Summit and enhancing the scope of China-Africa cooperation.
“Through our active participation in FOCAC, we continue to contribute to the shaping of the future of China-Africa relations,” he said.
For his part, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau, underscored the importance of Africa in China’s foreign policy. Wang reiterated the longstanding tradition of China’s foreign ministers visiting Africa first each year, a gesture that reflects China’s firm commitment to its relationships with African nations. Despite changes in the international landscape, Wang emphasized that China would remain dedicated to enhancing its partnership with Africa, which he called a cornerstone of China’s diplomatic strategy.
“China’s commitment to Africa remains steadfast,” said Wang. “Our bond with the continent is foundational to our foreign policy, and we will continue to deepen our cooperation regardless of global shifts.”
Wang also praised the Republic of the Congo for its critical role in FOCAC, noting that the country’s leadership as a co-chair was instrumental in the successful outcomes of the Beijing Summit. He expressed confidence that further collaboration would contribute not only to the Republic of the Congo’s development but also to its growing influence on the global stage.
“The Republic of the Congo’s contributions to FOCAC help elevate its international stature and are key to the success of our broader cooperation with Africa,” Wang added.
In addition, Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era, which will strengthen ties across multiple sectors, from infrastructure development to cultural exchange.
In closing, Gakosso extended his condolences to the people of China following the recent earthquake in Xizang Autonomous Region, expressing solidarity with China during this challenging time.
