Former Cameroonian footballer Rigobert Song, who previously played for Liverpool and West Ham, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Central African Republic (CAR).
The Central African Republic had an unsuccessful campaign in the AFCON group stage, which led to the dismissal of Raoul Savoy, who had been appointed as head coach.
During his playing career, Song represented the Cameroonian national team in 137 matches. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into management and took charge of the national team.
He led his team in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and last year’s AFCON. However, Song’s team was eliminated in the Round of 16.
In February 2024, Song’s tenure with Cameroon ended as his contract was not renewed. Since then, he has not worked with any team.
Song’s immediate task will be to deliver results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He will lead the Central African Republic in matches against Madagascar and Mali.
Currently, the Central African Republic sits in fifth place in the qualifiers with four points. For the team to progress, it is crucial that Song delivers a strong performance.
