Roald Poulsen, who left an indelible mark on the hearts of Zambian football fans for his remarkable achievements, has passed away at the age of 73.
The main reason for Poulsen’s legendary status among Zambians was his role in rebuilding the Zambia national football team after the tragic plane crash on April 28, 1993, which occurred before their match against Senegal. In this disaster, 18 Zambian players lost their lives. Despite this tragedy, just 67 days later, Poulsen managed to assemble a team capable of defeating African giants like Morocco.
Poulsen also coached Zambia between 1994 and 1996, as well as in 2002. His most significant achievement during his tenure was leading the team to a third-place finish in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Danish coach contributed greatly to African football, managing several teams in South Africa. His most notable role in the region was with Cape United. Additionally, in his home country of Denmark, Poulsen led Odense BK to a league championship in 1989 and a domestic cup victory in 1991.
Although he is no longer with us, Poulsen will always be remembered for his determination and the fight he put up for the Zambian national team after the plane crash in Gabon.
