Russia has strengthened its media presence in Africa by launching a large-scale editorial hub in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The new center, operated by the Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik, aims to provide news and information in both Amharic and English across multiple platforms, including radio, social media, a dedicated website, and mobile applications.
A Russian delegation, led by Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday. The Ethiopian leader described the meeting as an important opportunity to enhance Ethio-Russia relations.
At the official launch event, Valentina Matvienko highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that it would foster stronger ties between Russia, Ethiopia, and the broader African continent. The hub is expected to play a key role in increasing Russia’s outreach and engagement in Africa, particularly in the media sector.
Dmitry Kiselev, Director-General of Rossiya Segodnya, the media group overseeing Sputnik, emphasized the global reach of the project. He noted that interviews and reports from the Addis Abeba hub would be translated into 32 languages, ensuring that Ethiopia’s perspectives and news gain a broader international audience.
In addition to producing news content, Sputnik plans to establish a network of correspondents across Africa, including at the headquarters of the African Union. Several Amharic-language projects have already been initiated as part of the expansion.
This initiative marks Russia’s most significant investment in African media to date and aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties across the continent.
