Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Monday hosted Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló in Kigali, where the two leaders held talks aimed at advancing cooperation between their countries. The high-level meeting focused on enhancing bilateral ties and addressing pressing regional and global developments.
A statement from Rwanda’s presidency confirmed that discussions spanned “mutually beneficial sectors,” reflecting the leaders’ shared interest in deepening strategic collaboration.
President Embaló’s latest visit builds on a series of diplomatic engagements with Rwanda. In March 2022, he conducted a three-day state visit, during which he toured the Kigali Special Economic Zone and oversaw the signing of three key agreements between the two nations.
The memoranda of understanding signed at the time covered a broad spectrum of cooperation. One focused on economic and trade initiatives, another on educational exchange, and the third targeted joint efforts in tourism, business development, and environmental conservation.
The diplomatic rapport has continued to strengthen. In April 2023, President Kagame was awarded Guinea-Bissau’s highest national honour—the Amílcar Cabral Medal—reserved for foreign heads of state recognized as close allies of the West African nation.
Monday’s visit is seen as part of a broader strategy by both countries to solidify South-South partnerships and assert stronger regional influence through collaboration rooted in mutual respect and development goals.
