United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Rwandan economist Anthony Ngororano as the UN Resident Coordinator in Madagascar. In this role, Ngororano will oversee and coordinate the activities of all UN agencies operating in the country.
Prior to this appointment, he served as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Kenya and previously held a similar position in Mauritania. With over 20 years of experience in sustainable development, Ngororano has held leadership roles across the UN system and the private sector.
His extensive UN career includes serving as Chief of the Executive Board Branch at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in New York and holding key positions at UN Women, including Country Representative in Haiti and Chief of the Africa Section.
Ngororano joins other Rwandans in prominent UN positions, such as Ambassador Valentine Rugwabiza, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Central African Republic, and Ambassador Claver Gatete, head of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
Before his UN career, he was a Senior Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Rwanda and held various advisory roles at UNDP’s regional bureau for Africa in New York, as well as policy and planning positions in Nigeria, Zambia, and Rwanda. His private-sector experience includes working as an investment banker at Citigroup N.A. in Kenya and Tanzania.
Ngororano holds Master’s degrees in Development Economics and International Relations from the University of East Anglia and the University of Sussex, as well as an MA in Economics from the University of Edinburgh.
