Sao Tome and Principe, a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, is gaining attention as the meeting point of the prime meridian and the equator, often referred to as “the center of the Earth.” Known for its lush landscapes and historical ties to cocoa production, the nation is focusing on revitalizing its economy through organic cocoa and tourism.
Cocoa’s Rise and Revival
Sao Tome and Principe, once dubbed “Chocolate Island,” was the world’s leading cocoa producer during the early 20th century, thanks to its fertile volcanic soil and tropical climate. However, after independence in 1975, mismanagement and competition from larger producers like Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire caused its cocoa industry to decline.
Efforts to revive the sector have focused on organic cocoa production and global partnerships. Local chocolate brands are gaining international recognition, showcasing the potential of the island’s high-quality cocoa.
Tourism as an Economic Driver
Tourism is emerging as a promising sector for Sao Tome and Principe, with its unspoiled rainforests, pristine beaches, and volcanic landscapes. Highlights include Ilheu das Rolas island, where visitors can stand at the point marking the intersection of the prime meridian and equator, and Principe Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Eco-tourism initiatives, such as sea turtle conservation programs, offer unique experiences while protecting endangered species. Despite these attractions, challenges like limited infrastructure and healthcare facilities hinder the growth of the tourism industry.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
Sao Tome and Principe is strengthening ties with global partners, including China and Turkiye, last month Sao Tome and Principe Prime Minister visited Türkiye signing different agreements. Diplomatic relations resumed in 2016 have brought investments in tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure. Chinese support has improved farming techniques, healthcare, and education, contributing to the country’s economic diversification.
With its renewed focus on organic cocoa and tourism, coupled with international cooperation, Sao Tome and Principe is working toward a sustainable and prosperous future.
