Senegal marked International Women’s Day on Saturday with a major event at the National Grand Theater in Dakar. The gathering, led by Family and Solidarity Minister Maimouna Dieye, brought together hundreds of women, government officials, and civil society representatives.
Speaking at the event, Dieye emphasized the need for stronger commitment to women’s rights. She described the occasion as a chance to assess progress, address challenges, and push for real solutions.
The celebration was attended by Marie Khone Faye, the wife of the president, along with several ministers. Their presence highlighted the government’s focus on gender equality.
Dieye pointed to Vision Senegal 2050, the country’s long-term development plan, as proof of this commitment. She stressed that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye sees women as key to national transformation.
“The president has made it clear that women and girls are not just participants. They are the true drivers of Senegal’s progress. Our nation cannot advance without their leadership and contributions,” she said.
She also noted that women and development groups across Senegal are working to support the government’s push for inclusive and sustainable growth.
The event ended with a strong call for better policies, more investment in women’s empowerment, and continued efforts to close the gender gap.
