South African footballer Shaun Mogaila caused the death of a young girl after hitting her with his car.
Initially fleeing the scene, the player later turned himself in to the police within a few hours. He will face charges of negligence and reckless driving.
The 29-year-old player allegedly collided with a vehicle carrying a woman and two children, leaving one of the young girls unable to survive the accident.
The woman and the 13-year-old child are still receiving treatment in the hospital. Mogaila’s club, Sekhukhune United, has yet to release a statement on the matter.
Footage of the accident went viral on social media, sparking mixed reactions. While some people have condemned Mogaila for the incident, others have viewed his decision to surrender to the police as a noble act.
The player, who competes in the South African Premier League, recently played at right-back for his team in a match against Richards Bay. Just hours after the crash, Mogaila turned himself in to the Rabie Ridge Police Station.
