Last season’s CAF Champions League winner, Egypt’s powerhouse Al Ahly, suffered their first CAF Champions League defeat of the season.
Before the match, it was uncertain whether the team’s captain, 36-year-old goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, would be able to play.
However, he didn’t leave his team alone and participated in the game. Despite their underwhelming performance in the Algerian league this season, CR Belouizdad of Algeria dominated this match.
The home team took a total of 16 shots and created two major chances. However, neither team managed to score during the first 90 minutes.
The game was interrupted frequently, with nearly 30 fouls called, leading to extra time. In extra time, a shot by French substitute Hedy Chaabi was saved by goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, but Algerian left-back Naoufel Khacef capitalized on the rebound to score.
In the remaining minutes, CR Belouizdad managed to hold on to their lead and emerged victorious with a 1-0 scoreline, avenging their previous 6-1 defeat.
Today, in the CAF Champions League, the following matches are scheduled: Young Africans vs. TP Mazembe, AS FAR vs. Maniema Union, Raja CA vs. Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates vs. Stade d’Abidjan.
