Film Africa’s 11th edition is set to bring together a diverse range of film talent from Africa and its diaspora, highlighting the vibrant contributions Africans make to cinema. The festival will showcase how the expanding African film industry leverages digital technology to craft compelling narratives, enhancing its distinctive style and the vast potential for creative storytelling.
This year’s festival will feature a meticulously curated selection of over 70 films across various London venues. It will kick off with an Opening Ceremony on October 25th, featuring directors and key cast members, and will wrap up with a Closing Celebration on November 3rd, which will include exclusive Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. The festival aims to offer films that entertain, challenge, and inspire, reflecting diverse everyday experiences.
The Opening Night will spotlight the acclaimed documentary “Dahomey,” directed by Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop, who won the Golden Bear at the 2024 Berlinale. Set in the historic Kingdom of Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin), the film dramatizes the return of 26 royal artifacts from a French museum to their rightful home. “Dahomey” explores the complexities of cultural repatriation through meticulous storytelling and striking visuals, capturing the profound emotional reactions of the Beninese as they reconnect with their heritage.
The festival will conclude with “Black Tea,” a moving romantic drama and Berlinale finalist directed by Mauritanian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako. Starring Nina Mélo and Chang Han, the film tells the story of a young Ivorian woman’s transformative journey to China, where she discovers unexpected love and faces the challenges of cultural assimilation. “Black Tea” offers a unique perspective on aspirational migration between Asia and Africa, a theme rarely explored in cinema.
