The government of Sierra Leone has launched an investigation into claims that Jos Leijdekkers, a convicted Dutch drug trafficker and one of Europe’s most-wanted criminals, is residing in the country and has been seen attending public events alongside President Julius Maada Bio. The Sierra Leonean Ministry of Information and Civic Education confirmed the probe in a statement, acknowledging the serious nature of the allegations.
Authorities clarified that President Bio was unaware of Leijdekkers’ identity and has not received any official communication from foreign governments or institutions regarding the fugitive’s presence in Sierra Leone.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Sierra Leone Police have pledged to cooperate with international law enforcement agencies, ensuring a thorough inquiry into the matter. The government has called for full transparency as officials work to uncover the facts surrounding the allegations. “A comprehensive and transparent investigation is underway to ascertain the truth about the individual’s identity and activities in Sierra Leone,” the statement emphasized.
Leijdekkers, sentenced in absentia to 24 years in prison in the Netherlands for smuggling over seven tonnes of cocaine, is believed to have been in Sierra Leone since early 2023. His presence in the country, if confirmed, could raise significant concerns regarding international criminal activity and the potential implications for Sierra Leone’s governance.
