Somali government forces launched a large-scale military operation in Middle Shabelle, eliminating more than 70 Al-Shabaab militants, including senior commanders. The offensive, involving airstrikes and ground assaults, targeted key militant strongholds to prevent planned attacks on civilian and security sites.
According to the Ministry of Information, the operation took place in Adow-Guray (Hiiraan), El Ali Ahmed, and Al Kowsar (Middle Shabelle). Somali National Army (SNA) troops, supported by local Ma’awisley militia, disrupted Al-Shabaab’s movements, killing dozens and forcing the remaining fighters to flee. Security forces also seized weapons, ammunition, and destroyed militant armored vehicles.
Government officials described the mission as a critical step in reclaiming territory from Al-Shabaab as part of a nationwide campaign led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Over the past year, Somali forces, with the support of local militias and international partners, have regained control of several towns and villages.
Despite these victories, Al-Shabaab continues to pose a serious threat, conducting bombings, ambushes, and targeted killings. While the group has lost ground in rural areas, it maintains sleeper cells in major cities like Mogadishu.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab, urging citizens in liberated regions to cooperate with security forces and resist militant recruitment efforts. Officials emphasized that sustaining military gains and improving governance are crucial to ensuring long-term stability.
The government stated that further updates on the operation’s outcomes will be provided in the coming days.
