Somali security forces conducted a major offensive in Middle Shabelle, eliminating nearly 30 Al-Shabaab fighters, including key commanders. The Ministry of Defense confirmed the success of the operation on Monday.
The targeted operation took place near Hawaadley, a strategic village long used as a hub for Al-Shabaab’s logistics and operations. Defense Ministry spokesperson Abukar Mohamed stated that high-ranking militants were among those killed, including Abu Busri (Zakariye), Hassan Hussein (Abu Hamama), Hassan Nasrallah (Abu Baras), and Abdurahman (Moalin Aden).
Hiiraan Online reported that the mission is part of a national campaign to weaken Al-Shabaab’s influence in central and southern regions. Clearing the Hawaadley area is considered a significant step toward disrupting the group’s operations and improving regional security.
Despite recent gains by government forces, Al-Shabaab remains a persistent threat. The group, affiliated with al-Qaeda, continues to launch suicide bombings and ambushes, aimed at destabilizing the country and spreading fear.
Al-Shabaab has exploited Somalia’s political instability for over a decade, using violence, propaganda, and financial extortion to maintain its grip. Government forces are intensifying efforts to dismantle the group’s networks and secure key regions.
