Turkiye has started construction on a rocket launch facility in Somalia, marking a significant advancement in its space program and an important economic opportunity for the Horn of Africa nation. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized that the strategic location of Somalia—situated on the eastern tip of the continent, near the Indian Ocean—makes it an ideal site for minimizing debris risks associated with rocket launches.
At an event in Mogadishu, President Mohamud highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the project, stating, “The project will help create jobs and income for the country. Hosting a launch pad for Turkish satellites is even more important than the billions of dollars and opportunities it will create.” This facility not only aims to advance Turkiye’s aspirations in space technology but also to generate significant revenue and job opportunities for Somalia.
The geographic position of Somalia allows for launches away from densely populated areas, reducing the risk of debris and ensuring safer satellite deployment. This strategic placement has been emphasized by Mohamud, who stressed that it provides a unique advantage for space launches compared to other locations worldwide.
The construction of this facility underscores Turkiye’s growing influence in Africa and its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Somalia. As Somalia seeks to rebuild after years of clan warfare, this project represents a critical step in fostering economic development and technological advancement in the country.
This launch facility will not only support Turkiye’s space ambitions but also mark a milestone in Somalia’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and become a regional hub for technological innovation.
