Somalia is set to undergo a major transformation with the announcement of a Turkish space base project, positioning Somalia as one of the ideal locations globally for launching spacecraft due to its proximity to the equator. Türkiye plans to build the space base in Somalia, with the project seen as a major step forward for both countries in space exploration and technological advancement.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We are making great strides in the space race. The collaboration with Somalia will elevate both nations and bring new opportunities for Somalia’s development. This project is a significant step toward advancing our shared vision for the future.” The space base will provide Somalia with a unique opportunity to advance its technological sector while also offering training and employment to its young people.
The agreement to move forward with this project comes after the signing of the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement in February 2024, between Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and Somali Defense Minister Abdulkadir Muhammed Nur. As part of the agreement, Türkiye will assist Somalia in securing its maritime borders and will work on transferring control of Somali waters to the Somali Navy within the next ten years.
Additionally, Turkish fishermen from Sariyer are expected to contribute to Somalia’s economic development. As President Erdoğan mentioned, Turkish fishermen will teach Somalis the art of fishing, which will help revive the local fishing industry in Somalia, reduce illegal fishing, and secure the economic potential of Somalia’s maritime resources. The project is set to save Somalia approximately $300 million in lost fishing revenue by fostering sustainable practices and helping Somali fishermen regain control over their waters.
The space base project, combined with the maritime collaboration, highlights the deepening strategic relationship between Türkiye and Somalia. With this partnership, both nations are poised to play a prominent role in the global space industry, while Somalia stands to benefit from significant advancements in its infrastructure, economy, and technology.
