Somali government troops, in coordination with local militias, have successfully reclaimed Baraag Ali-Gaduud, a key Al-Shabaab stronghold in southern Mudug. The village, positioned 50 kilometers west of Harardhere, had served as a pivotal hub for the militant group to organize and launch attacks in the region.
Military leaders overseeing the operation reported the destruction of key Al-Shabaab hideouts and the penetration of fortified positions, effectively crippling the group’s ability to mount assaults in nearby areas. They noted that this victory marks a significant milestone in the ongoing two-year effort to drive Al-Shabaab out of Mudug.
Retaking Baraag Ali-Gaduud is not only a tactical success but also a strategic achievement, advancing efforts to secure the larger Mudug region. Somali authorities are focused on disrupting Al-Shabaab’s operations by removing their control over this essential base.
The operation’s success also underscores the increasing effectiveness of collaboration between local militias and government forces, a vital component in the broader fight against Al-Shabaab.
In December 2023, Somali forces, with the support of international allies, launched an airstrike against Al-Shabaab militants in Baraag Ali-Gaduud. The strike, carried out 31 kilometers south of Harardhere, targeted vehicles transporting fighters and key leaders. Although two vehicles were destroyed, the exact number of casualties was not revealed.
