Somalia has announced a transformative development project called “New Mogadishu,” designed to modernize the capital with improved infrastructure and stimulate economic growth. The initiative features a new airport, a modern port, and an economic zone, aimed at attracting investments and creating job opportunities.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, launching the project on Thursday, emphasized the resilience and contributions of Somali entrepreneurs in driving national progress. He highlighted the project’s potential to uplift communities and provide employment for the country’s youth.
Transport Minister Fardowsa Osman Egal noted that the new airport would expand the nation’s aviation capacity, replacing the overburdened Mogadishu airport with a state-of-the-art facility. This development, she added, would enhance international connectivity and foster economic opportunities.
The $650 million New Mogadishu project has been welcomed by Somali business leaders, who see it as a significant step toward strengthening local and international investments. Mohamud Abdikarim Gabeyre, head of the Somali Chamber of Commerce, expressed optimism, highlighting the priority given to Somali entrepreneurs in the initiative.
Additionally, President Mohamud inaugurated another ambitious project, the $400 million Gateway Complex, which includes Somalia’s first five-star hotel, an international convention center, luxury apartments, a modern hospital, and a shopping complex. These projects aim to revitalize Mogadishu, long affected by instability, and position it as a regional economic hub.
Despite ongoing security challenges posed by al-Shabab, these developments represent Somalia’s determined efforts to foster growth and build a brighter future.
