In a pivotal development ahead of the anticipated elections, Somaliland has officially received the ballot papers for the polls scheduled on November 13, 2024.
The announcement was made by Mr. Musa Hassan Yusuf, Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), during a press briefing at Egal International Airport in Hargeisa.
The arrival of these ballot papers marks a significant advancement in the democratic journey of Somaliland.
Chairman Musa Hassan emphasized the NEC’s dedication to conducting elections that are free, fair, and transparent. He stated, “The receipt of the ballot papers is a testament to the democratic processes in Somaliland and a setback for those opposing our efforts,” expressing that the elections represent a celebration of the region’s political rights.
The ballot papers were handed over to the NEC commissioners, along with representatives from various political parties and organizations involved in the electoral process.
These stakeholders are collaborating under an ad-hoc implementation committee established to ensure the effective management of the election.
During the event, the chairman called upon all eligible voters to actively participate in the election by casting their votes in large numbers.
“Today, we announce to the public that the voting materials have arrived,” Mr. Musa Hassan stated, outlining the NEC’s readiness for the election.
He stressed the necessity of maintaining peace and urged party supporters to exercise their rights respectfully and calmly during the voting process.
The chairman further assured the citizens that the electoral commission is fully equipped to conduct a peaceful election, viewing this as a crucial factor for the stability and democratic progress of the region.
The 2024 elections represent a significant juncture for Somaliland, where voters will select their leaders in an event deemed vital for the region’s political landscape.
The electoral process is expected to attract attention from political parties, organizations, and the international community as Somaliland strives to uphold its democratic commitments.
With the timely arrival of ballot papers and the NEC’s promises of transparency, the stage is set for what many hope will be a successful and orderly electoral exercise.
