In South Africa, a 65-year-old man was arrested for allegedly aiding illegal miners by providing access to a mine shaft through a bedroom in his home. The incident occurred in the Nkandla informal settlement, near Khuseleka Shaft 1 in Rustenburg.
Police reported that the man allowed miners to use his bedroom as a passageway to the mine shaft. A raid following a tip-off led to the discovery of the operation, during which several suspected miners fled through a hole in the floor. A 31-year-old individual was apprehended. Both men face charges related to illegal mining and possession of suspected stolen goods. They will appear in Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Authorities, with mine security’s help, recovered mining equipment from the residence and continue to search for additional suspects. Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the operation as part of the ongoing fight against illegal mining.
