Pravin Gordhan, a towering figure in South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and a long-serving government minister, passed away on Friday at the age of 75. Gordhan’s political journey began with his resistance to apartheid, and he remained a pivotal force in South African politics through various key roles until his retirement.
Gordhan’s family announced that he died peacefully in the early hours of the morning at a hospital, surrounded by his loved ones, including family members, close friends, and long-time colleagues from the liberation struggle. His death followed a battle with cancer, which led to his hospitalization earlier this week.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep sorrow at Gordhan’s passing, praising him as an extraordinary leader whose unassuming demeanor hid his profound intellect and tireless commitment to his roles as an activist, legislator, and cabinet member. Ramaphosa highlighted Gordhan’s exceptional contributions to South Africa’s political and economic landscape.
Gordhan’s activism began in his teenage years when he joined the African National Congress’s underground operations against the apartheid regime in the 1980s. His dedication to the struggle played a significant role in South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy. In 1994, following the end of apartheid, Gordhan was elected to parliament as part of the new democratic government.
His most recent government role was as Minister of Public Enterprises from 2018 to 2024, where he was responsible for overseeing state-owned enterprises. Prior to this, Gordhan served two non-consecutive terms as Finance Minister—from 2009 to 2014 and from 2015 to 2017—during which he was instrumental in shaping South Africa’s economic policies. From 1999 to 2009, he led the South African Revenue Service (SARS), significantly improving its efficiency and establishing it as a leading global tax authority.
Gordhan was also a vocal critic of corruption, notably challenging the administration of former President Jacob Zuma. His firm stance against corruption within government and state enterprises earned him both respect and controversy.
