VAR implementation is set to begin in the South African League. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed this development on Sunday.
FIFA has a specific rule regarding this matter: the technology must be integrated through the South African Football Association (Safa).
For this reason, the Sports Minister shared that he has met with Safa officials and is now actively working to bring VAR to the league.
“We are committed to ensuring that VAR is introduced in line with FIFA regulations. The necessary funding is available, and a budget has also been allocated for referee training. We are carrying out this process in collaboration with Safa and the PSL,” McKenzie stated.
The implementation of VAR is expected to reduce refereeing errors in South African football and align the country’s leagues with global standards.
Moreover, the inclusion of a referee training program in the budget demonstrates the South African leadership’s strong commitment to bringing the league closer to world-class standards.
